Will Gen Z be Employable?

For decades, the first rung of the career ladder was a given: graduate, take an entry-level job, build experience, move up. That rung is breaking. A landmark Stanford Digital Economy Lab study led by economist Erik Brynjolfsson found that employment among 22- to 25-year-olds in AI-exposed occupations has fallen 19 percentage points below where it would be expected to be, while experienced workers in the same fields show no comparable decline. The researchers were careful with their language, calling these findings “canaries in the coal mine — rather than causal estimates.” But the direction of the trend is unmistakable, and it is landing almost entirely on the youngest, least-experienced workers.

The pattern is consistent across nearly every white-collar field that once hired new graduates by the thousands: fewer openings, higher bars for “entry-level,” and roles being absorbed by AI tools before a human is ever considered.

What Did Dario Amodei Say About AI and White-Collar Jobs?

Few people in the AI industry have been as blunt as Anthropic CEO Dario Amodei. He told Axios that AI could wipe out half of all entry-level white-collar jobs — and spike unemployment to 10-20% in the next one to five years. He did not frame this as a distant hypothetical: “It’s going to happen in a small amount of time — as little as a couple of years or less.” Amodei has said he feels obligated to speak plainly about it: “We, as the producers of this technology, have a duty and an obligation to be honest about what is coming,” adding that “most of them are unaware that this is about to happen. It sounds crazy, and people just don’t believe it.” He has even described a strange kind of best-case scenario: “Cancer is cured, the economy grows at 10% a year, the budget is balanced — and 20% of people don’t have jobs.”

What Does the Data Say About Gen Z’s Job Market Right Now?

This is not just one CEO’s warning — the numbers are already moving. The Federal Reserve Bank of New York reports that the unemployment rate for recent college graduates sat at 5.6% in the second quarter of 2026, with underemployment at 42% — meaning nearly half of recent grads who do have a job are working in a role that does not require their degree. ServiceNow CEO Bill McDermott has put a number on where this could be headed, noting that young people currently face “9% unemployment” but warning that number “could easily go into the mid-30s in the next couple of years” as AI agents take over routine work, with roughly three billion AI agents projected to be deployed across enterprises by 2030.

Is This a Recession, or a Permanent Shift in Entry-Level Employment?

The Stanford researchers noticed something important about how this decline is happening: it is coming through reduced hiring rather than increased firing, and the gap has been steadily widening since August 2025. That distinction matters. A layoff wave from a recession eventually reverses when the economy recovers. A hiring freeze on an entire tier of jobs — because the tasks those jobs used to require no longer need a human being at all — does not reverse when the economy improves. The jobs are not paused. They are gone, and they are not coming back for this generation the way they came back for previous ones after past downturns.

What Happens When Tens of Millions of People Can’t Find Entry-Level Work?

If Amodei’s 10-20% unemployment estimate or McDermott’s mid-30s projection for young workers comes even partly true, we are talking about tens of millions of people in their early twenties who cannot get the first job that was supposed to start their adult life. That raises questions nobody currently has good answers for. How do you earn a living when the job that used to exist for someone with your exact skill set has been automated out of the hiring pipeline? How do you save for a home, or qualify for a mortgage, on no steady income? How do you start a family — get married, have kids, put down roots — on the kind of economic footing that generations before you took for granted? What does a society do with tens of millions of permanently unemployed young adults, and what does it mean for the people themselves, for their sense of purpose and dignity, if the answer is: we don’t know yet?
