Will AI and automation push society toward universal basic income and more government control? On the Garden of Thought podcast, author Brace McCoy warns that AI-driven automation, the case for UBI, and quiet institutional expansion are converging into what he calls a governmental control "super storm." He argues Christian discernment is essential to recognizing it before it arrives.

I recently joined Jeff Lippman on his podcast Garden of Thought for an eighty-minute conversation about my book, The Government’s Plan for Containing the Alien Contagion, and How We Will Justify Killing Billions of Humans. Jeff wanted to trace the throughline from my eleven years in the Army and West Point education, through my later work in the defense industry, to the warnings the book raises about AI, aliens, and forced population reduction. AI, Automation, and the Case for Universal Basic Income
Jeff and I spent a good portion of the episode on a question that’s usually treated as separate from the book’s main thesis but isn’t: what happens to a labor market when automation and an aging workforce hit at the same time? I argued that the “solution” being floated in policy circles, some version of universal basic income, is also a quiet admission that large numbers of people are being written out of the economy. That admission is exactly the kind of premise the book warns gets repurposed the moment a government needs to justify who is “essential” and who is not.

How Institutions Quietly Build the Machinery of Control
We also got into something I think doesn’t get enough attention: the way large philanthropic and cross-sector “coalitions” build durable, unelected influence over public policy years before any crisis arrives. Jeff pushed me to be specific, so I walked through how these architectures function less like charity and more like standing infrastructure, ready to be activated the moment a government needs a fast, coordinated response to something like a declared alien contagion.

Where Christianity Fits In
Given the name of Jeff’s podcast, it’s no surprise our conversation eventually turned toward faith. I get asked often whether alien phenomena and Christian belief are compatible, or whether one has to give way to the other. My answer stays consistent: the theological question is real and worth taking seriously, but it’s also the exact kind of question a government can exploit, framing any encounter as either divine or demonic to steer public reaction toward whatever policy response it already wants.

Jeff and I covered a lot more than fits in this summary — automation, coalition-building, and where Christian faith fits into all of it. If you want the full conversation, watch the episode here, and the book, The Government’s Plan for Containing the Alien Contagion, and How We Will Justify Killing Billions of Humans, goes into all of it in far more depth.
