When “Too Many People” Becomes Policy
We spent a long stretch of the episode on artificial intelligence — not as a distant threat, but as a labor-displacement machine already running today. Jay pushed me on the uncomfortable next step: once enough jobs are gone, the conversation quietly shifts from “how do we retrain people” to “how many people do we actually need.” That reframing, from economic disruption to population problem, is exactly the pivot the book warns readers to watch for, because it’s the same pivot that makes a declared “contagion” politically useful.

Jay asked a question I think more people should ask themselves: are you actually afraid of aliens, or are you afraid of what a government would do in response to them? I walked through why that distinction matters more than the encounter itself. Fear is the on-ramp — it’s what makes emergency powers feel reasonable rather than alarming, and the book argues that governments have gotten remarkably good at manufacturing or amplifying exactly the right amount of it at exactly the right moment.

We closed on a topic Jay clearly finds as fascinating as I do: the decades-long, deliberately slow drip of official UFO disclosure. I laid out why I don’t think that pace is accidental — a population conditioned gradually accepts extraordinary claims through official channels, and rejects them from anywhere else. That conditioning is infrastructure. By the time any government wants to use “nonhuman biologics” language for a real policy purpose, the public has already been trained on how to receive it.
